Is Monopsony the Right Way to Model Labor Markets? A Review of Alan Manning’s Monopsony in Motion

چکیده
Manning proposes that the ‘traditional’ monopsony model, once regarded as an analytical curiosity, be adopted as a widely-applicable description of firms’ behavior in labor markets. In Manning’s view, search frictions in the labor market generate upwardsloping labor supply curves to individual firms even when firms are small relative to the labor market. Thus a model of ‘monopsonistic competition’ best characterizes labor markets as a whole. Manning’s book applies this new perspective to a wide range of ‘traditional’ topics in labor economics, ranging from labor supply, to gender discrimination, to the effects of trade unions on wages and employment, generating refreshing new insights in each case. Ultimately, however, this reader was left unconvinced that monopsony is the ‘right’ model of most firms’ labor market behavior in the long run.

The Real Thin Theory: Monopsony in Modern Labour Markets
Models of ‘modern monopsony’ based on job differentiation and/or search frictions seem to give employers non-negligible market power over their workers while avoiding the assumption of ‘classical monopsony’ that employers are large in relation to the size of the labour market that many labour economists find implausible. But, this paper argues that this is somewhat of an illusion because modern...
متن کاملClassic or new monopsony? Searching for evidence in nursing labor markets.
The market for registered nurses (RNs) is often offered as an example of "classic" monopsony, while a "new" monopsony literature emphasizes that firm labor supply is upward sloping independent of market structure. Using data from multiple sources, we explore the relationship between nursing wages in hospitals and measures of classic and new monopsony. Wage level analysis fails to provide suppor...
متن کاملMonopsony power and relative wages in the labor market for nurses.
This paper examines the thesis that monopsony power is an important determinant of wages in nursing labor markets. Using data from the 1985-93 Current Population Surveys, measures of relative nurse/non-nurse wage rates for 252 labor markets are constructed. Contrary to predictions from the monopsony model, no positive relationship exists between relative nursing wages and hospital density or ma...
متن کاملClassic Monopsony or New Monopsony? Searching for Evidence in Nursing Labor Markets
Prior studies find that hospitals face upward-sloping RN labor supply, which is taken as evidence of monopsonistic power. But previous research finds little relationship across labor markets between RN wages (relative to alternative wages) and measures of market size or hospital density. This inconsistency might be resolved if “classic” monopsonistic power varies over time owing to demand-suppl...
متن کاملFood Marketing Policy Center Wal-Mart’s Monopsony Power in Local Labor Markets
Despite considerable debate as to Wal-Mart’s impact on retail workers, to date there has been little structural analysis on the topic. This paper measures and tests for Wal-Mart’s monopsony power in local labor markets using a dominant-firm model and data on contiguous U.S. counties where the company operates. Empirical results show that Wal-Mart’s monopsony power over workers varies significan...
